"It is Oklahoma City University's pleasure to honor one of the legendary masters of tap dance and entertainment for his commitment to this American art form," said John Bedford, dean of the Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management.
At a time when tap dance was fading from Broadway and Hollywood, Duncan's charm and talent captivated audiences on the Lawrence Welk Show. Duncan brought the art form to a new medium allowing Americans across the nation to experience tap dance in their own homes.
"He played an influential role in keeping tap alive for its resurgence into popular culture," said Jo Rowan, chair of the OCU dance department.
Duncan has performed at Carnagie Hall, Lincoln Center and with symphony orchestras across the country. Appearing on numerous television shows, Duncan was the first African American hired as a regular cast member of a weekly variety show.
The campus is invited to a tap jam honoring Duncan at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Edith Kinney Gaylord Center, home of the Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management.
